A pair of former NFL running backs, Matt Jones and Christine Michael, combined with a strong defense to lead the St. Louis BattleHawks to a 29-9 victory over the visiting New York Guardians on Sunday.

Jones, who formerly played for the Washington Redskins and Indianapolis Colts, rushed 15 times for 95 yards and a touchdown and Michael, who played for four NFL teams in five seasons, ran 13 times for 44 yards and a score.

Jones leads the XFL with 224 rushing yards this season.

The BattleHawks (2-1) rushed for 156 yards and went 7-for-14 on third downs for the game.

The Guardians (1-2) lost their second straight game by 20-plus points, both on the road.

New York used three quarterbacks, with Marquise Williams, Mike McGloin and Luis Perez combining to go 19 of 31 for 217 yards. St. Louis' Joe Powell took a lateral and scored the first kickoff return touchdown in XFL history in the second quarter.
