Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Chase De Jong was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday one day after being struck by a liner on his left knee.

De Jong was dealing with inflammation after taking the blow.

David Peralta of the Arizona Diamondbacks hit a scorching liner off the inside of De Jong's left knee during the third inning of Monday's contest, won 4-2 by the Diamondbacks.

De Jong somehow bolted toward the first-base line to field the ball and toss it from the ground to first to retire Peralta. He was attended to by team trainers and threw some warm-up pitches before being cleared to continue.

"Once I recognized where I got hit and that I could still bend my knee, I needed to try to get through that and give those boys innings, because we've got a few more games here and then in San Francisco," De Jong said after Monday's contest. "We don't need to be having starters coming out early in the game right now."

De Jong served up three homers in the setback, giving up four runs and seven hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two.

The 27-year-old De Jong is 1-4 with a 5.77 ERA in nine starts for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates also recalled a pair of 24-year-old right-handers in Nick Mears and Max Kranick from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Mears is with Pittsburgh for the fourth time this season but has yet to pitch in a game. Kranick is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two 2021 starts with the Pirates.
